A person who was born blind … Do they know about the importance of eyes? I guess not, because what you have never had, you can never miss. It’s a pity though to see that most people who have eyes do not give them a good care as they deserve. As long as you open them in the morning and see your spouse, yes, the one face they told you would see first thing every morning for the rest of your life, you will never know when something goes wrong. The eye is a delicate and complex organ with many parts working together. Yes, even the tears are important. So if you are a man and you still think that the “shedding tears is a show of weakness,” crap, think again! But first, some important information about the eye: The sclera is the white part of the eye. It has an exterior that appears smooth and white but its interior has groves and is brown in color. It is quite flexible, which adds strength to it. As a result, it is very durable. It has tendons attached and joined with the sheath of the optic nerve. The cornea is the clear part of the eye that bulges in front. It acts as the main reflective surface in the eye. The cornea is richly supplied with nerve fibers making it very sensitive to any kind of irritations like cold air, chemicals and other foreign objects. The iris or pupil of the eye contains a sphincter muscle whose task is to constrict or dilate the pupil. It has a diameter ranging from about 3-7 mm. The iris is heavily pigmented and is responsible for giving the eye its color. It can be blue, brown black, green or any other color depending on the melanin distribution. The lens is a transparent body made up of proteins and water and enclosed in an elastic capsule. It consists of layers of firm onion and nucleus. The shape of the lens can be changed via the ciliary muscles. Contraction of muscles causes the lens to bulge. Finally, the anterior chamber is located between the iris and the cornea. The posterior chamber is located between the lens of the eye and the iris. Did you know that your eye is bigger, far bigger than it looks? You have seen the glaring holes in the skull, you know, like the one you see in the flag of the pirates and buccaneers in movies. You know that the eye is bigger than what you see, and that the prediction is that 100 years from now, the human eyes will be bigger, bulging, doesn’t make the picture any prettier. Does it? Can you assemble the frontal eye? Image courtesy of: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9966518/Eye-drops-could-treat-macular-degeneration.html |
