I know, what man cannot find an answer to, he will theorize. And that is how the Miasma Theory came about, from some smart thinker who wanted to explain certain predicaments. Do not take this badly because in all due respect, this theory is almost right, and better yet, it led to the emergence of better theories and discoveries.

Back then, it was the ideal thing, the best explanation that people could muster, to explain diseases and anyway, it was better than old “tribal theories” where if anyone got sick, they believed someone had bewitched them.

This theory said that the presence of air pollution, never mind that there were no vehicles to blame then, led to the outbreak of diseases like Chlamydia and cholera. It further explained that miasma was a poisonous vapor that resulted from decaying matters of the suspended particles in the air. The characteristic of this vapor was a bad smell or breath.

This theory came to be known in the middle ages and lasted for several centuries. One killer disease that can be related with this theory is the malaria disease. Its two names are delivered from the Italian language mala for bad and aria for are thus bad air.

This theory was accepted in China, Europe and India. They believed that the decaying matters created the particles because of the environmental factors. The environmental factors referred to were mostly poor hygiene conditions, contaminated water and foul air. They believed that the disease was not spread from one person to another, but an area with several individuals suffering from it facilitated the spread of the disease. The infected people were identified with bad smell.

Come the 19th century, the theory took a dramatic turn where some peopled believed that it was spread through physical contact while others remained adamant with the first belief. The changes were brought about by some sanitary reformers. Industrialization and urbanization were at their peak. They lead to more outbreaks due to the presence of filthy, foul smelling neighborhoods because of over-population.

The Miasma Theory led to the emergence of the germ theory. It originated during the second half of 1800s and replaced the first theory.

There, the miasma theory is out on the table for you. It makes some interesting reading though to the smarty college kids of today, it doesn’t count. Hey, back then, this was the best explanation for epidemics and outbreaks. Me … I just wish things were just as simple today.
