The gods of the Greeks have never ceased to mesmerize. They were given personalities and they could even marry. You will think that this starts like the story of creation in the Bible, but it’s different. Beauty, life, happiness, anger, chaos, death, sadness… Much like you find in humans, even weakness and lameness. There was a Greek god who was born lame, the god of metalwork and craft. But I digress, (and) before I am accused of disrespect to Mt Olympus, let’s move on.

At the very beginning, there was Chaos, also called Khaos. This was the emptiness, the vastness. Out of Chaos came Mother Earth Gaea, so powerful that she created the mountains, the seas and the rivers. After her, Khaos brought forth Tartarus who lived in the underworld and later, Gaea and tartarus united and created the fire breathing, 100-head dragon: Typhoeus. Eros came forth from Chaos as an embodiment of love, very handsome. Erebus and Nix, the silence of the dark and the embodiment of the night came later from Chaos. They united to bring forth Atmosphere (Ether) and Hemer (Day).

Now, Uranus was the husband of Gaea. Their children were Hecatonchires, the Cyclopes and the Titans. Hecatonchires was the god of war. Cyclopes was a one-eyed monster. Hades was the god who ruled the world of the dead and he was very greedy, always looking for an opportunity to increase the number of his subjects. Cronus was the youngest son of Gaia and Uranus. Poseidon is the god of the sea, so powerful and could shatter anything. His power is only second to that of Zeus. Zeus is the ruler of Mt Olympus, the god of the skies. He was the father of all gods and mortals as well. Demeter was the goddess of corn and harvests. She is believed to have taught the humans how to plough and sow seeds.

Persephone was also the goddess of the underworld and she was so beautiful such that even Hades wanted her. Pallas-Athenes (Athena) on the other hand was the goddess of war, justice, skills and wisdom, art, industry and more. She was a ferocious fighter but would only fight to protect the nation from outside invaders. Hestia was the goddess of the hearth, honored by hearths in the city where a sacred fire burned for her. Coeus was very intelligent, the god of intelligence. Ares was very ferocious, the god of war. Humans and other gods did not like him. Prometheus was a titan and he was the wisest of them all. From him, all human beings benefited greatly. Hebe was the goddess of youth, the cupbearer of the gods together with Ganymende. Haephestus was the god of fire and metalwork. Born lame, he had been cast out of Olympus but was welcomed again when he married Aphrodite.

Pontus was the sea god while Ourea was the goddess of the hills. She made the long haunts and rolling hills.

There, that is as good a follow-up on the gods of this family tree as anyone will ever give you. However, we have only given you the best about them. If they got angry, they could do some nasty stuff, could be very bad and you did not want to be in their way if they came calling for punishment.

Can you Answer the questions about the Greek gods?
