Don’t go confusing Barabbas and Barnabas. Barabbas was a crook, released so Jesus could be crucified, when the bloodthirsty stupid mob decided that they would rather have a murderer among them than a man who healed, taught and raised the dead. Barnabas is one of the unsung heroes of the Christian faith because while he had a lot to do with the spread of the gospel, he was not as mentioned as other apostles. He is the Barnabas that you will come across several times in the letters of Paul and any books speaking about St Paul. Born in Cyprus and given the name Joseph, he was later given the name Barnabas by the apostles, which can be translated to “the son of encouragement” obviously because of his input in the work of growing the church then. It is widely seen as his efforts with St Paul to unite Jews and Gentiles using the gospel because he argued that there was no difference in Christ. He was there when the church separated from the old synagogues and the name given to them was Christians. Through preaching and converting people to Christianity, Barnabas went to many cities alongside St Paul on missionary journeys. There came a time when the community wanted to send the two to preach in the second missionary journey, unfortunately they could not work together. This was because of a heated argument that revolved around one John Mark. Mark had deserted the two in the first missionary trip and thus Paul thought he did not deserve to be in the second while Barnabas wanted to offer him another chance. This led to their separation in ways with Paul taking Silas back to the churches he had started in the first missionary trip and Barnabas taking Mark to Cyprus. Barnabas was a martyr, meaning that he was killed because of his religious beliefs. When he was preaching the gospel in Salamis, some Jews, who were envious of his success, dragged him out of the synagogue, tortured him in inhumane ways and then stoned him to his death. John Mark who was also his kinsman, watched the barbarous act and secretly entombed his body. Funny, whenever I think of Barabbas the crook, the image of Blackbeard the pirate comes to mind. Terrible men, both of them. Can you Identify the location? Image courtesy of: http://surburg.blogspot.com/2013/06/feast-of-st-barnabas.html |
