If there is any historical piece, object or even site that has generated the type of controversy that the tomb of the great traveler and warrior named Ibn Battuta has generated, then I have not heard of such. This is heightened when I read an account given by a Korean Muslim who has heard so much about this man and set out on an expedition with the family to see the tomb, but after days of search and exploration of the whole of Morocco, it was impossible for them to locate this tomb. There are real controversies about the life of Ibn Battuta after he returned from his long journey. The story has it that he was mandated by the then ruler to tell one of the scholars his story. It was this scholar who put this down in writing. But after this, what happened next? The story also has it that he got a job as a judge, remarried and probably got some other children apart from the ones he gave birth to when he was on the road. The story also has it that he used this story to entertain all that cared to listen to him. After all these, it was confirmed that he died in 1369. It is very obvious that many people will always desire to make tourist visits to the tomb of this great man, and so it is. There is a place mapped out by the commoners as the tomb of Battuta. Though unmarked, they all claim that the spot in Tangiers is his final resting place, even without final confirmation from any authority. The tomb was erected on his ancestral family land in Tangiers, which is located in an extensive garden. Other features have also been added to the tomb to make it more historic and to attract more tourists. There is a fountain that is erected on the tomb formed from a faucet for the people living around. When you get into the tomb, you will be greeted by the presence of a very short casket that is actually not up to 6 feet long. The casket in questions has an image of Mecca positioned on its head and to which its head points towards. This tomb receives numerous visitors as the year runs, and they are mostly Islamic tourists. In commemoration of Battuta, a crater on the moon is now named Battuta, and this is used as an online friendship and matchmaking site for Arabian singles. There is also an airport in Tangiers and a ferry named after him. Can you Locate his tomb? Image courtesy of: http://www.citoyenhmida.org/ibn-batouta-globe-trotteur-infatigable-mal-connu-et-meconnu/ |
