If the small intestine was a Formula One track, it will leave even the best drivers dizzy with all the twist and turns. Luckily it is not, rather, it plays an important role in food digestion. It is not only responsible for breaking down of food, it also aids in the absorption of nutrients into the blood. Being so important means there has to be deliberate care of it. Sadly, a lot of people rarely bother till they have gut-related discomforts. Because that is improper, and because you need a healthy gut for overall body function, we have written top tips to support a healthy small intestine and gut.
Tip 1: Chew your food properly
Your body uses a lot of energy to convert the food you eat into energy. Digestion starts from the mouth – chewing the food and mixing it with saliva. The better you chew your food, the lesser the energy required to break them down – reducing the wear and tear of the gut gears.
Tip 2: Keep a food Diary
There are many benefits of keeping a food diary. Very rarely do people know the real cause of their gut problems, they merely guess. This leads them on the path of trial and error, diet switching and uninformed elimination of food from their diet. However, keeping a diary will help you find the trigger to your gut discomfort. Rather than eliminating A, B and C, you can just drop C.
Tip 3: Chill! Take life easy
In the research by Konturek et al, they reported that stress alters the interaction between the gut and the brain. This alteration they reported, can lead to different gastrointestinal disorders. So, the next time you have disorders like inflamed bowel disease (IBD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), then your stress levels might be responsible. So before having that meal, try to relax – take a breather, breath in and breath out.
Tip 4:  Protect your gut bacteria
There are over a trillion bacteria in the gastrointestinal tracts – both the good and the bad. The good ones aid digestion and absorption, while the bad ones cause bloating and gut lining damage. Things to avoid include:
  • Sugar: The phrase “The Wolf you feed wins” is perhaps apt here. Sugar nourishes the harmful bacteria.
  • Prescription drugs: Antibiotics and other prescription drugs kill the bacteria in the gut.
  • Processed foods: The small intestine and gut have to do extra work to digest processed foods.
Other tips include taking it easy on fiber intake and leaving a gap of 12 hours between dinner and breakfast. Remember a healthy gut is much more than just to digest food; it aids the immune system as well. Follow these tips to have a healthy gut.
