The influence of American missionaries in the founding and growth of the American University of Beirut has been told, researched and reported, and therefore needs no rehashing. It is no wonder then, that a lot of Americans also attend the school and thus becoming alumni after graduation (captain obvious!), and that a fair amount alumni from the school end up working in America, or nearby Canada. It is also no wonder that of the other regions that have chapters, the Northern American region has the most chapters. There is a total of 25 chapters of the Worldwide Alumni Association of the American University of Beirut (WAAAUB) in North America, concentrated in the United States and Canada. The WAAAUB chapters in North America also have a very high participation from its members, having an active population of 86% tied with Rest of the World and second only to the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region whose active population is 89%. The chapters in North America also make up 13% of the overall membership strength of the WAAAUB, in addition to having 3 professional chapters. One of the recent activities of the North American chapter was the celebration (academic style celebrations) of the 150th anniversary of the school from March 15 to March 19 (with a landmark visit to the United Nations on the 17th of March) across three states in the United States. With the current President of the American University of Beirut, Fadlo R. Khouri also gracing the occasion at the Old Naval Hospital in Washington, where alumni and friends welcomed him. Coincidentally, the Old Naval building was also built in 1866 – the founding year of AUB. Wherever you are across North America, in the ranches of Texas or the beaches of Miami, there’s a WAAAUB chapter close to you, if not at your doorstep. And if you are ever visiting the region, looking for old buddies or at the very least guys and ladies with similar values and a shared history you can connect with or share a bottle of beer with, you can reach out anytime. Can you Locate the North American chapters? Image courtesy of: http://alumni.aub.edu.lb/s/1716/start.aspx?gid=2&pgid=61 |
